Portsmouth, Rhode Island 06/03/10

We camped overnight in a City Park called Melville Ponds, and on a walk the next morning we were surprised to see swans nesting on the far side of a pond. When the head swan spied us, it tore across the water in our direction, but stopped short of crashing into us! Unperturbed, Mom (or perhaps Dad?) and three large, fuzzy cygnets remained on the nest, safe and secure. Neither of us had ever seen nesting swans "in the wild," and we were mighty impressed.
