Ipswich, Mass - 6/16/10

Ipswich was colonized in 1633 and is today a lovely old New England town. It's known for its early 17th century homes - 58 houses in town were built prior to 1725 - the largest number still standing and occupied of any community in the country. We walked along High Street, where many of these houses are located, admiring and appraising. Like the photo below, several more were being scraped and painted - a big job for big houses!

We also visited the Old Burying Ground.

 

The Old Burying Ground begins at street level and climbs! We counted 77 very steep stone steps; the grounds are terraced for laying out the dead. Benjamin Smith was either a granite quarry worker or he wanted to break out of that gravesite really badly!
