Labrador 7-12-10

Vehicles lined up, the bow of Apollo opened, and it was all aboard for a 90-minute ferry trip across the Strait of Belle Isle from St Barbe NFL to Blanc-Sablon, Quebec. Underway, off to the north we could see whales spouting, while porpoises played in our wake.  Loved the voyage!

Maybe sailing across the straight to Labrador wasn't initially planned, but we like to be flexible, and, since we were THIS close to Labrador, we said, "Let's do it."

As we neared the Quebec coast,

we spied a really large white something: Iceberg! 

After landing, we drove east a few kilometers and we were in Labrador! For Heaven’s Sake: Us in Labrador! Who’d a thunk it?  Wow!

We encountered some fog and some rain (later in the day). Near Forteau (population 477), we found an empty, small gravel lot beside the road and overlooking pretty English Cove.  We pulled in, thinking to stop for the night. Before long, an older couple came by and said, yes, this is perfectly acceptable!  And it doesn’t cost a thing.

Instead of a simple day trip to Labrador, we decided to take our home with us so we could spend several days (or whatever) to see the sights. The Labrador Coastal (paved) Drive begins in L’Anse au Clair and ends in Red Bay. Beyond that, it’s a gravel road to Battle Harbour. We may drive Smartie to Battle Harbour for a look-see, or we may spend a night there. The possibilities are as limitless as the view. (Labrador is in the same time zone as Newfoundland.)
