4/28 - 5/1, 2011 Louisiana

And the fun begins already! We are on our way!  We left Daphne early Thursday afternoon, the RV as packed as it was going to be. We were heading west for the short 200-mile hop to my sister and BiL’s home near Baton Rouge, and the strong southerly cross wind made for some challenging driving!

Favorite sisters!

On the bikes again!

Jimmy and I usually cut each other’s hairs, but my overgrown mop was too much for both of us. So on Friday, I actually went to a hair salon for a “proper” haircut. Now I’m short, and easy to care for! That afternoon we all relaxed, enjoying sitting outside in my sister’s wonderful back yard, and admiring each other’s rigs (our Vista and their Bullet tow-behind). We four and three good friends had a blast at PF Chang’s and a delicious, filling dinner.

On Saturday the four of us decided to ride the Tammany Trace Rails-to-Trails bike path, even tho it’s a bit of a drive to get there. Nannie packed us a nice picnic lunch. We parked at the 2,800 acre Fontainebleau St Park located on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain, and rode 32 miles R/T from Mandeville to Slidell, LA. Pedaling was nice in the shade, but hot in the sun; I was wishing for cloud cover! Back at the State Park, we walked around the brick ruins of Fontainebleau Plantation Sugar Mill built in 1829. Then: home, showers, and dinner. We were all kinda tuckered afterwards. Had a great day!

Based on weather predictions, we figured leaving Sunday morning would keep us safe from the nasty storms that had been pummeling the southeast. We didn’t get a real early start (hard to leave family early), but we sure loved the tailwind that blew us up I-49 to Shreveport! Thankful to have A/C, and happy to leave behind Louisiana’s teeth-clenching, headache-producing rough cement pavement!!

Into Texas –– we drove on to Tyler St Pk and almost made it into our site before a strong thunderstorm hit. At least, we got situated before the torrential rains. This storm moved off to the northeast, producing golf-ball sized hail and spawning a couple of “small” tornadoes. We were grateful that all we got were wet shirts!

  1. Yahoo! I look forward to seeing your adventures posted here. Good photo of the gang at Changs. Did BOTH my sisters ride 32 miles?
